Main town the District, Castagneto is situated on the top of a hill. This village has grown around the Castle of the Della Gherardesca Family. One of the most important places worth mentioning is the Church of San Lorenzo where a wooden, 15thcentury rood is preserved, This Holy Cross was found under the ruins of the ancient monastery of San Colombano and is a local object of worship. It is celebrated every three years within the framework of the “Feste Triennali”.
It is an ancient village where time seems to have stopped. The Castle and its single arched door leading to the historic centre of Bolgheri, have kept their old charm. The alternation of seasons is marked by the different colours and smells of the surrounding cultivations and hills. Bolgheri has become famous partly because of a poem written by Giosoué Carducci ( “Davanti San Guido”) at the end of the 19th century and for its “Viale dei Cipressi”, (cypress avenue), one of Italy’s listed monuments. The village is also known today for its registered designation of origin (DOC Bolgheri) that has been awarded to the production of many world famous wines.
5 Km far from Castagneto, Marina is situated behind a thick coastal pine-wood that was planted during the first half of the 20th century. The long sandy beaches, dunes covered with sea daffodils and other plants, stretching for several km are the perfect setting for green holidays.
